I Learnt the Hard Way...but You Don't Have To!
How I Discovered the Magic of Stories in Business...
When I started my first business in 2010, I felt so excited. I’d been doing stand-up comedy and acting for about 10 years and I wanted more flexibility to pursue them. Even though I’d been a Director in the Corporate world, being an entrepreneur was new to me, so I listened to other people, and they told me the most important things I needed were a business plan, a website, and of course business cards.
 
I felt so proud, a couple of months later, when I had my plan, a shiny website and some sweet business cards. But that feeling didn’t last long after my Dad said, “these are great, but have you made any money yet?” I waffled on about traffic and how things were different now, but inside I was like, damn, he’s right, I probably need to get some customers.

I realised that if I wanted to make my business work I had to do the thing I was least comfortable with… selling. You see, even though I did stand-up comedy ‘sales’ to me was way scarier…every time I thought about it my stomach flipped, but I knew that I needed to do it.

I found some local business networking events and went armed with my business cards, and a 50 second pitch filled with all the features and benefits of my stuff.

I was ready to sell baby!

I told them all about my stuff, all that it could do for them, why it was better than other stuff… and nothing. I did a longer presentation at a few, and I went into more detail about what they’d get, what a great experience they’d have… and nothing.

I felt crushed… and every time people said no to my stuff, it felt like they were saying no to me.

I went on some sales training, to fix what I was doing wrong. After that I started using all the techniques, asking questions, magnifying their pain, soft closes… and then the hard close, and although it got me a couple of customers, it felt kind of sleazy and pushy.

Six months on I had just a handful of clients… and they weren’t people I really wanted to work with. I was deflated and frustrated, my shiny dream felt tarnished. Then I got a call from an old boss offering me a job…I didn’t want to go back to the corporate world…but I felt like I just couldn’t get through to people, so I said yes, and felt like a failure.
Before I went back to corporate I’d booked onto a conference where some big business gurus were speaking, and I decided I’d go anyway.

It was a big event with hundreds of business owners, all eager as puppies to get some golden nuggets of knowledge from the business gurus giving talks. So, the first speaker comes on stage and from the get go he has us all in the palm of hand, and for the next 60 minutes he tells stories, shares business gems and makes us laugh, and then he made us an offer…and suddenly people from practically every row were getting up and rushing to the back to buy his stuff. Now, having done stand-up comedy for so long, I’d seen plenty of people work a crowd, but this guy had not only kept us engaged and entertained, he’d also got people running to the back to buy his product, which I thought was pretty special. But then the next one did the same thing!

For the rest of the day I was fascinated, paying attention to what they did to get this reaction… and I began to feel excited as I noticed that the one thing that all of the successful ones did was tell stories. They told their story, and stories about other people, and it was the stories that hooked us and kept us listening, it was the stories that talked to our pain and fear, it was the stories that dealt with our objections, it was the stories that showed us what results could be possible for us, it was the stories that led us to say ‘yes’.

I sat there feeling so happy and stupid at the same time. I was an expert in storytelling, and yet I’d failed to recognise that the thing I was good at… was the thing that could have made my business successful.

Since then I’ve continued to learn about storytelling, and all that I could about marketing, influencing and sales, so that I could bring them together in a new way... where it doesn’t have to be sleazy, and it’s not about me, and that new way is STORY LED MARKETING.

So many entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants end up settling for less… lowering their expectations of themselves and their business, or even giving up like I did, because they can’t get their message heard and actioned upon by the right people. The people who will love what they have to offer.

That’s because they don’t understand the journey that they have to take their buyer on, and how to use their stories to connect powerfully with their target customer’s problem and pain, in a way that compels them to act.

NEURAL COUPLING
A story activates parts in the brain that allows the listener to turn the story in to their own ideas and experience thanks to a process called neutral coupling.

MIRRORING
Listeners will not only experience the similar brain activity to each other, but also to the speaker.

DOPAMINE
The brain releases dopamine into the system when it experiences an emotionally-charged event, making it easier to remember and with greater accuracy.

CORTEX ACTIVITY
When processing facts, two areas of the brain are activated (Broca’s and Wernicke’s area). A well-told story can engage many additional areas, including the motor cortex, sensory cortex, and frontal cortex.
